You can walk to the counter of Alamo - Christchurch International Airport car rental.

Your rental will be serviced by Enterprise. Upon arrival please be on the lookout for the Enterprise counter located in the Arrivals hall of the airport terminal. Your rental will be serviced there. Customers arriving at Christchurch Airport will find the Enterprise counter as they exit the international departures, turn left and the Enterprise/Alamo/National branch is located adjacent to the Spark Telcom shop in the Arrivals hall. Car park is located a short walk away, outside the terminal building.

Towards any New Zealand islands, taking rental cars crossing islands is allowed with certain conditions.

Ferry crossings with the vehicle are permitted. Customers are required to inform the rental branch about any cross-border travel at least 3 days in advance. Unauthorized cross-border travel will result in a breach of contract and incur a penalty charge. Parts of New Zealand are not suitable for access by rental vehicles. If the renter takes the Vehicle to any of the following areas, their Liability for any loss or damage may increase and any optional protection product se1ected such as Loss or Collision Damage Waiver will be voided: Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook), Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Te Paki Stream Bed, the road to Macetown in the Queenstown Area, the coast road to Russell (Northland), or any unformed road, track, or thoroughfare, including beaches and gravel roads that are not officially designated a road.

Ferry Transportation: Allowed

Alamo allows you to bring the rental vehicle on the ferry. However ferry companies may charge you to bring a vehicle across Cook Strait.

The initial car provided had almost 100,000 km on it. Within two days it had a front-end problem and I noticed it also had two bald tyres. Car was changed over two one that was much better. Counter staff tried hard.

Pretty good, communication wasn't too difficult. During the rental period, they provided follow-up via phone and email with reminders. An additional driver cost $25 NZD per day. Returning the car was very convenient; I simply handed the key to the front desk staff and it was done. I booked a Toyota but got a Mitsubishi instead, which was easy to drive and relatively new. The staff didn't try to upsell insurance since I already purchased one domestically, so there were no extra charges. Initially, I wanted to rent snow chains but decided they weren't needed due to the weather, so the pre-authorization fee for them was deducted.

When I arrived at the location, there was no staff available. They left a note asking to call a phone number, but hilariously, the number was for the pickup location itself. With no one around, what was the point of the number? Thankfully, someone arrived after about 10 minutes.
