I rented a car from this company and extended the rental twice. During the first pickup, the female staff at the front desk was very friendly and professional, providing a car in excellent condition. The second extension was smooth as well, and I kept the same car. However, during the third extension, the front desk staff was an older gentleman who insisted on giving me a different car. It took over 20 minutes to switch to a car with less-than-ideal condition. On the third day of driving, the car's battery died after parking for two hours near the Acropolis. I contacted the rental company, and they sent someone (on a motorcycle) to jump-start the car. I immediately requested a battery replacement or a different car. After driving to the rental company's location near the airport, their technician claimed that the battery issue was my fault and asked me to pay for the replacement. After a 20-minute discussion during which my group strongly insisted, the company replaced the battery (which took only five minutes), and the car worked fine thereafter. Returning the car was the most tedious process I've ever experienced—various inspections were done repeatedly, causing the return process to take about 30 minutes. Overall, my experience was good, but there were issues with the attitude and methods of certain staff members.
I have nearly ten experiences of renting a car abroad, and this is the worst condition I've encountered. The car is very old (possibly 10 years old) and has been repainted, without an office address for the rental company.
The car's condition is extremely poor (the brakes make strange noises, and there's a fear it won't stop on steep slopes). The car is old with dented doors and numerous scratches. Since there was no documentation to indicate car damage (very irresponsible), we had to meticulously take photos as evidence. There was so much damage that we took around 150 photos, spending over an hour under the hot sun, which was very inconvenient on the roadside, hampering other cars and requiring us to move the car. The lighter socket was also broken, so we couldn't charge our phones, which was very inconvenient.
If you are not returning the car near the airport, such as at a port, you need to pay an additional 15 euros in cash (even though the staff is driving to the same place, not sure why there’s a difference?!)
If you need to pick up or return the car an hour or two earlier, there are extra charges, and there's no flexibility with only specific times every two to three hours for pick-up and return. This is the first time I’ve encountered such a rental company, it took us half a day. I recommend avoiding this company in Santorini.
Terrible experience. They charged for a tiny scratch at the bumper 250 euros, that can be fixed with a 10 euros spray. But they will never fix it anyway because the car has multiple scratches from previous users. Even if they have to charge a 50 euros fee would be acceptable. But is was obvious that the car had in the past a major accident and was dangerous while driving because the whole car was trembling with a speed of only 60km/h. The treatment was so unacceptable that they lost a customer. They didn’t even share a price list for any damage but charged at will. I am sure that if I move legally I will get a large sum back.
“Excellent experience - I would use Surprise retail again.”
About SURPRICE RENT A CAR:10.0/10
Irene (counter staff) was fantastic, very helpful. Unfortunately I did not get the gentleman's name at drop off, but he was just as helpful and pleasant.
This time, I rented a car with only 100 kilometers on it, and the other cars also looked very new. Overall, it seems like the best company is quite professional.
The car was in poor condition, full of damages. The pre-authorization of 1,100 euros was directly charged 26 days after returning the car, without any documents or communication. Now I have to resolve this through Zuzuche.
